Exhibition: In Your Dreams: 500 Years of Imaginary Prints
September 8, 2010 - January 2, 2011
Approximately 120 European and American prints from the DIA’s collection celebrate the life of the imagination. Several of the museum’s most significant prints constitute about half of the images in this exhibition. These include selections from Albrecht Dürer’s 1497/98 visionary woodcut series The Apocalypse such as the The Four Horsemen who represent conquest, war, famine, and death; the complete sets of Piranesi’s large fantastic Prisons, 1761, cavernous but spatially impossible stone interiors; Goya’s eerie Los Proverbios, 1816, complete with winged, bat-like humans; and Odilon Redon’s iconic lithographs from his Temptation of St. Anthony, 1888, with its well-known free-flying eyeballs. Works by artists such as Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, and Joan Miró present more modern twists on unworldly subjects inspired by each artist’s thoughts.
Exhibition: An Intuitive Eye: Andre Kertesz Photographs 1914-1969
November 24, 2010 - April 10, 2011
The exhibition surveys Kertész’s career with nearly 100 photographs taken in Hungary, Paris and New York, many of which are drawn from the DIA’s permanent collection. For Kertész, the years spent in Paris in the early 20th century were especially pivotal. An Intuitive Eye will highlight his Parisian photographs to demonstrate his unique style that combined the techniques and compositions of photojournalism with the aesthetic sensibilities of abstraction employed by Modernist artists. In his photographs of Parisians at rest, play or work in the side streets, public parks and quiet corners of the city, Kertész created a vision of Paris that has helped to define the city as a place where the quiet traditions of daily life are revered.

DIA Photography Exhibits and Lectures
Exhibition: Detroit Experiences: Robert Frank Photographs 1955
March 3 - July 3, 2010
Over 60 rare and many never-before-seen black-and-white photographs taken in Detroit by legendary artist Robert Frank are the subject of this exhibition. The work was created while Frank traveled throughout the United States in 1955 to take photographs for his ground-breaking book The Americans, published in 1958.
Renowned for its automobiles, assembly line ingenuity and tough blue collar work force, Detroit was an inspiration for artist Robert Frank who photographed people and the places they lived, worked and spent their leisure time. In factories, at lunch counters, in drive-ins, and while visiting other familiar sites including Belle Isle and Briggs Stadium, Frank captured life that was distinctly American. Through his images, he transformed the everyday experiences of Detroiters into an extraordinary visual statement about American life in the 1950s.
Check the DIA calendar website at www.DIA.og for more details, as well as this Word Document file and PDF for information about these exhibits as well as future programs.
